Behind the scenes

15#THE PACKAGING RESEARCH

In parallel with the creation of the first textile perfume, I started my research on the packaging.

And here I have to say, this is my favorite part. I’ve been passionate about packaging development since I started working in 2016.

IT TAKES IMAGINATION

What you need to know is that in the beginning, everything starts from the imagination and a drawing.

That’s great, I have a lot of imagination!

First, I think the product packaging should reflect the image of the product. The first packaging element that needs to be found is the bottle. It is often the element of the packaging that will define the others and it is also often the element that has the longest delivery times. I immediately think of a glass bottle.

So I grab a notebook, start drawing a draft of the package I want to find.

Accord Infini Packaging Design to be found

I imagine a 1 liter – 33 fl.oz rectangular bottle, a recycled plastic cap from the oceans, a small label or silkscreen.

During my research, I discovered that glass bottles are mostly used for spirits and wine. So I understand that I will have to change the 1 liter size I was imagining. Let’s say 75 centiliters – 25 fl.oz, that’s already very good!

Then I look everywhere for a rectangular bottle with a screw ring but I never find the exact shape I am looking for. So it will be a cylindrical bottle.

I set out to find THE bottle that would be practical to use and aesthetically similar to a perfume bottle.

I find a few and request samples.

SAMPLE RECEPTION

Receiving samples is always a festive moment for me. It’s a great opportunity to test the product and see how it works.

Again, you need to have imagination, the sample received is without label and empty. It is necessary to project yourself.

I have a crush on one bottle in particular. It is sturdy, elegant and easily comparable to a perfume bottle.

I validate the bottle and start testing to choose either the label or the silkscreen.
I quickly realize that with the amount of information I have to indicate on the product, a label is preferable. I quickly imagine a double-sided label with a graphic universe visible inside the bottle.

Then, I go in search of a cap. Things got tougher because, contrary to what I thought, a cap made of recycled plastic from the oceans requires very large quantities in production. I also realize through my questionnaires and brainstorming that the image of plastic is not high enough for the product.

So I am looking for a cap made of noble and eco-designed material. After having dug several tracks: resin, aluminum, zamak (zinc alloy), I fall by chance on wood. Its natural and eco-designed aspect seduces me immediately.

Finally, after having validated all the first elements of the packaging, I launch the study of an eco-designed box entirely in cardboard. It will represent the high-end and colorful universe of the product.

The product starts to take shape. It is now time to create the website.

To be continued…
