CLEAN YOUR MATTRESS

You regularly wash your sheets, pillowcases, comforters and pillows but when was the last time you cleaned your mattress?

Even if your bed is covered with a mattress protector or a cover, your mattress needs to be cleaned because bacteria, dust mites, perspiration, dead cells, the cosmetics you use or even pet hair can get into it. It’s annoying, isn’t it?

Don’t worry, we have good news: you don’t have to have your mattress professionally cleaned every time you want to refresh it. With our tips, cleaning your mattress can be done in a few quick and easy steps.

Soon you’ll be so used to it that you’ll do it every time you change your sheets!

Before you start, here are the things you need to follow our guide:

  • A basin
  • A sponge in very good quality or a washcloth. We recommend using a washcloth to scrub the stains (a sponge could crumble).
  • Depending on the nature of the stains: baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, soda crystals or white vinegar
  • Accord Infini liquid detergent
  • Sodium percarbonate
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Optionally, a steam cleaner or an iron

A little advice: It is preferable to do this cleaning operation in the morning. This way, especially if the weather is nice, you can open the windows to let the bedroom breathe and let your mattress dry.

STEP 1: LET IT BREATHE!

This first step is as simple as can be, but crucial to maintain your mattress. Remove all bedding, covers and pillows from your mattress and let it air out for a few minutes, ideally at least 15 minutes.

Do the same for a child’s mattress.

STEP 2 : TREAT MATTRESS STAINS

Look for stains on your mattress. If you find any, treat them one by one:
For urine or perspiration stains: hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and soda crystals will be your allies.

Have some hydrogen peroxide and baking soda at home?

Mix one pint of 3% hydrogen peroxide with four tablespoons of baking soda. Add one tablespoon of Accord Infinite liquid detergent and pour the solution into a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the stain, then sprinkle the baking soda on the affected area. Leave for at least two hours and then remove the excess baking soda. Blot up the excess moisture with a dry cloth to avoid streaks or water spots and let dry.

Accord Infini

Have soda crystals at home instead?

Pour 6 tablespoons of soda crystals into a liter of hot water. Dilute the crystals until they are completely dissolved. Rub the mixture into the affected area, then blot up the excess moisture with a dry cloth to avoid halos or water spots and let dry.

For blood or food stains: white vinegar is a must.

Mix 50 cl of white vinegar with 20 cl of warm water* and add two tablespoons of Accord Infini liquid detergent.
*Be careful, if you treat blood stains, use only cold or fresh water.

Don’t worry about the smell of white vinegar, it is very volatile and will disappear shortly after application. Rub the mixture into the area, then blot up the excess moisture with a dry cloth to avoid streaks or water spots and let dry.

STEP 3 : CLEAN AND DEODORIZE

Once the mattress is dry, we now move on to the key element: sodium percarbonate. This is a bleaching solution and a good alternative to using bleach. The crystals cling to odors and absorb them. Sprinkle the crystals evenly over your mattress and leave them on for 30-60 minutes.

STEP 4 : VACUUM

Use a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle to remove all crystals. Make sure the nozzle of your vacuum cleaner is clean.

Tip: To avoid overheating your vacuum cleaner and for a more uniform suction, remember to open the small air valve on the tube of your vacuum cleaner.

When you’re done, take care of your box spring by vacuuming under the mattress to remove dust and prevent dust mites from growing.

STEP 5 : GOING THE EXTRA MILE : STEAM

For extra cleanliness, you can steam clean your mattress with a steam cleaner. Alternatively, you can do the cleaning with your iron. Just make sure that your tool heats up to a temperature of 120°C to effectively eliminate bacteria. The heat from the steam kills germs and eliminates any remaining odors. Don’t forget the sides of your mattress!

STEP 6 : NOW GIVE IT A REST!

Let your mattress rest for a few more minutes before replacing your bedding. To promote good air exchange, open your windows.

STEP 7 : REFRESH IT BETWEEN CLEANINGS

We recommend that you clean your mattress every time the season changes.

Between cleanings, remember to air your room well. We recommend that you do this every morning for at least 15 minutes, making sure to fold down the comforter. This simple gesture is beneficial to limit the risk of mold and the proliferation of germs.

Also, freshen up your mattress once a month by vacuuming it to reduce sources of allergens. To prevent the appearance of stains or spots, use a mattress protector and machine clean it once a month.
